Jason Diamond, Design and Managing Director of Luxury Pools and Outdoor Living, tells us about the integral role of stair design in one of our most remarkable projects—an extensive renovation on a steep block in North Avoca, located on the picturesque Central Coast of New South Wales.

In a project where elevation changes presented both challenges and opportunities, the stair design became more than just a functional element—it was key to creating seamless flow throughout the outdoor space. Thoughtfully integrated with the pool and surrounding landscape, the stairs connect multiple levels while enhancing the overall aesthetic and user experience.




Navigating the Challenges of Steep Terrain


Jason begins by explaining the context of the project:


“This North Avoca property posed significant challenges due to its steep terrain, a common feature among many properties on the Central Coast of NSW,” Jason explained. “The topography presented obstacles such as difficult yard spaces, limited accessibility from top to bottom, and complexities in construction due to the steep gradient.”


Designing the flow of the properties outdoor spaces required meticulous planning and an eye for detail. “There’s nothing simple about it,” Jason continued. “Every design element had to be carefully considered—not just for aesthetics but for functionality and flow.”

Crafting Flow with Thoughtful Stair Design


One standout example of this thoughtful design is the curved stairwell. “You'll notice the corner stairs here are all curved,” Jason points out. “As you navigate down this beautiful stairwell, we've incorporated subtle curves—a little curve here, a little curve there—so that movement feels intuitive and comfortable. It's about creating an experience, not just a structure.”


Another significant improvement involved replacing an old, broken stairwell with a redesigned curved version. “That meant you could walk down and navigate from multiple points—whether from the back door or another side of the property—all while enjoying that seamless, free-flowing feel we aimed for.”







Collaboration and Quality Finishes


The transformation didn’t stop with the stairs. Jason and his team meticulously reimagined the property’s walkways, stairs, and lighting structure. Collaboration with Avoca Beach Lighting ensured the outdoor space was as functional and inviting at night as it was during the day.


To complete the look, they incorporated a special Matala Limestone Paver from Artisan Exterior tiles. “Their honed stone finish beautifully complements the beach-inspired Hampton aesthetic of the house renovation,” Jason noted.


This project stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design, expert craftsmanship, and seamless collaboration. It’s proof that, with the right team and vision, even the steepest challenges can be transformed into stunning, livable outdoor spaces.
